Charlotte FC Routs the Philadelphia Union at Home

By: Asa Forrest

Charlotte-- Philadelphia Union came to Charlotte, North Carolina looking for three points to boost their chances of getting the Supporter’s Shield Award. However, they ran into a Charlotte FC team ready to play. In warm ups, Charlotte’s starting goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina injured his hand, forcing backup keeper Pablo Sisniega to play with just 20 minute’s notice.

After Charlotte FC and Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper kicked off the game, Charlotte got off to a quick start. They dominated possession from the beginning, putting them on the front foot. In the 24th minute, Charlotte striker Daniel Ríos scored to put his team ahead. The team did not stop here. Ríos netted another three goals in the second half, giving Charlotte a 4-0 win. This is a massive win for the playoff-hopeful team, as it gets them closer to that position. However, for the Union, this loss is going to cost them the Supporter’s Shield. Los Angeles FC beat the Portland Timbers on Sunday, which secured the trophy for them. On Wednesday, Charlotte continues their push for playoff soccer against the Columbus Crew at home.
